Jaunt defines its latest addition to the VR market, Jaunt One Camera as the most amazing camera ever built. Formerly known as Neo, Jaunt One camera is built as the first professional VR camera used for capturing stereoscopic 3D, 360-degree videos.
The camera is capable of recording in a low-light environment and giving perfectly stitched panoramic images. What is even more amazing is the fact that Jaunt is renting its Jaunt one camera to the public through a pilot program with Radiant Images, a Los Angeles-based digital cinema company.
The Build and Design
The Jaunt One Camera Sports a sleek industrial design which in reality looks like a gadget straight out of a matrix movie. The camera has been built upon light field camera technology which not only records the direction of the light but also records its intensity, which will allow cinematic VR specialists to film 360 degrees’ 3D footage that can be viewed through gears with a parallax of some degree in it.
The Jaunt One Camera has two models: ONE J1-24G and ONE J1-24R:
ONE J1-24G
The first model of Jaunt One camera which just like its looks has a sci-fi name, includes 1 & 1.2″ “native HD” global shutter sensors, which are best suited for low light environment and capturing fast moving objects. ONE J1-24G can capture footage at 120 frames per second and a maximum ISO of 3200. The Footage captured in the prototype phase of the Jaunt Camera One seemed to be imperfect, but the company promised of improvements in the stitching software and looks delivering on them quite well. The model has a dynamic range of 11 stops per module and supports an output resolution of 8k*4k per eye. This variant of Jaunt One camera also includes custom, 130º Diagonal, and f/2.9 optics.
ONE J1-24R
One thing that separates the two variants of Jaunt One Camera is that the ONE J1-24R, unlike One J1-24G, includes 1”, 20MP, Rolling Shutter. The rolling shutter may cause some apparent motion blur and therefore might not be pleasing to some. The shutter system included is ideal when used for Outdoors and high-resolution time-lapse photography. The variant is capable of capturing footage at a rate of 60 frames per second and a maximum ISO of 3200. There is no difference between the two regarding dynamic range as the later can capture at 11 stops per module as well. One J1-24R can render output at an output resolution of up to 32K*16K per eye. It also sports custom, 130° diagonals, f/2.9 optics.
Both the Variants of Jaunt One camera have single button start and stop feature that increases efficiency and effectiveness. The form factor has been built in such a way that it makes the camera weatherproof and compact simultaneously. The camera also includes 24 large format sensors with superior low-light performance.

The Renting out to public
Jaunt is among the few Camera manufacturers in the market that not only manufactures the hardware but also creates its software and content in-house to deliver an end to end solution to its customers. Recently the manufacturers of Jaunt One camera have partnered up with Radiant Images to launch a pilot program that will allow Jaunt to rent out its camera to public. Through its renting project, Jaunt aims at providing all necessary assets to the creators through its cloud stitching software and rendering pipeline. Those who rent the camera also gets access to all the end to end software and hardware required to create immersive VR content along with the Jaunt app to provide a 24/7 support to its customers. Through this program, the company is trying to provide professional grade equipment to the less equipped general public which opens a door of possibilities to them which they did not have before.
Price
After looking at the rental prices of the two variants, it is quite clear that it surely is not for a hobbyist videographer. Initially, the camera goes on rent at a fare of $ 4500 per day which is way more than the rates of OZO which revolves around $2800. In this cost, the rental program provides access to cloud-based stitching system that is necessary to weave together the footage from 24 videos to create an integrated Virtual Reality experience. The Jaunt One camera is available for rent to lucky ones who happen to live in the Los Angeles through Jaunt and Radiant Images rental houses.
The Verdict
As stated by Jaunt, Jaunt One Camera surely looks to do justice with its ‘Amazing’ title through its specifications and the support it is offering through the rental program to its customers, but does it keep up the same level of amazement through its performance?
Well, it does so, with certain limitations. The Footage captured is highly immersive, and one would undoubtedly feel as if he has been dropped into the proceeding of a movie or an event. The experience indeed is quite immersive, and it is like nothing you have experienced so far. But what causes the limitation is the glitch around the viewer, that is, the area that could not be captured by the camera dues to its placement on the tripod. The is pretty noticeable but apart from that if one goes into the thought of how immersive Virtual Reality can get, Jaunt One camera sets a benchmark. It will make the viewers a sensation of being there without being there simultaneously and it is going to get just one word from its viewers, ‘Amazing."
Jaunt has declared that it has partnered up Google and the partnership makes them preferred VR content creator for Google and its partners. Despite high rental rates that make it a strict for professions, it might be a boon for ambitious yet, low budget movie creators. How Jaunt comes out of the limitations faced by the Jaunt One camera would be kind of interesting to see. Their success might just begin an era of omnipresent Virtual reality.
